Early

Today can be described as "early" for two reasons:

1) I am thinning early. 30 is far too early in life to be losing one's hair.

2) I am starting my 8dave flickr stream early. This is mainly because I am impatient, but also because I received a lovely new second-hand flash today, from ebay. A Nikon SB-10 - and it works very nicely with my D50 thankyouverymuch. Bargain. I thought, a nice new flash warrants a nice new flickr stream.

So here we are. Flickr will no longer be a photographic dumping ground for me. My last stream was a mess. This will be good. Enjoy.

Starting afresh, photowise

So the marvellous Hivelogic python script is currently backing up my entire flickr account. It's going to take some time, but when it's done it will be marvellous. It's also automatically putting my photos into folders based on the sets they're in. Clever. Also, whenever I add any new photos to my stream, all I have to do is run the script again and it will add all the new additions to the backup folder.

My plan, if you've not followed on twitter, is to post all "life" photos to Posterous, and only post "good" shots to my new flickr account. And that is going to start on New Year's Day, 2010. My new flickr address then, is http://flickr.com/photos/8dave. It will remain empty until January 1st.

I'll keep using my daviddave flickr stream for now, but will probably post more photos here rather than there.

I like starting afresh, if you hadn't noticed.

Hivelogic - Backing Up Flickr

This is absolutely awesome, if a little geeky.

I am currently downloading every single photo that I ever uploaded onto flickr. Seeing as though I have well over 5000 photos on my account, it is taking some time. It will probably still be downloading in 24 hours time.

It's a python script, for those who are interested. It's dead easy to set up.

I'm doing this with the aim of starting a fresh flickr account very soon, and abandoning daviddave. But obviously I don't want to lose all my photos, so I am downloading them and will zip them all up and archive them for safe-keeping.
