A good day of teaching

Today the consultant head that the authority have placed in our school came into my lesson and watched me teach for 15 minutes or so. He liked what he saw, and commented that it was nothing like the report of my teaching that he was given from my previous inspected lesson. Obvious. It was a Year 3 class, not a Year 1 class. Today I had a good day of teaching.

I'm inadequate, apparently

Or at least, that's what the person observing me thought of my Year 1 music lesson last Wednesday. The headteacher gave me my feedback today. It was pretty poor feedback, much of which I disagreed with. Okay, I had no learning objectives. Big fail on my part. But apart from that, I don't think it went too badly. Year 1 are amongst my least favourite year groups to teach, along with Reception and Year 2. The whole of Key Stage 1 then. Not surprising, seeing as though I'm trained to teach secondary kids.

So who knows where from here. Learning objectives would be a good step forward, especially seeing as though the lovely OFSTED could come as soon as next week. Hopefully I'll have turned into at least a satisfactory teacher by then. Or, if they could observe me teaching older kids, I'd be happy with that too.

In other news, I have the day off tomorrow, and piles of ironing to get through. Suggested listening for me whilst I iron?

Nothing's happening fast

I am sitting in my new music-room-to-be. I can see stacks of chairs, an abundance of industrial vacuum cleaners, boxes of bottle lids, a large step-ladder, a slightly smaller step-ladder, a pile of empty cardboard boxes, and other miscellaneous rubbish.

I'm not too optimistic that I'll be able to teach in here any time soon. I am told that October half-term is the time that my room will be ready, but I'm not holding my breath.

In other news, my ukuleles have STILL not arrived. Nor has anything else I ordered, except for a new CD player.

Making little children cry

Yesterday morning I was teaching 4/5 year-old children, as is the norm on a Tuesday morning. One particular child - whose name shall be kept private, but for the sake of this story shall be called Little Billy (okay, I can't actually remember his name. I teach 21 different classes each week, give me a break) - was being a little chatty and messing around with his friend's hair. Little children find the strangest of things to do to misbehave.

So I quietly but sternly told him to stop that, and to move next to me so I could keep a better eye on him.

Little Billy got up from where he was, his lower lip started to pout, tears welled up in his eyes, he stood in front of me and, fighting back the tears, said to me:

"I'm not your friend anymore."

I wasn't sure how to respond. I think I said something like, "Okay, well sit down then."

Despite momentarily losing the friendship of a four year-old child, it made my day.

Tried but failed

Waking up feeling a little better, but still abnormally tired, I decided to go into school today.

Once I got on the road, I didn't feel too great. So when on arrival, when asked how I was feeling by the head, I told her I wasn't good, and thought I should go back home.

I registered a class, took them down to assembly, and back up, taught them for 5 minutes, then my replacement supply-teacher took over and I went home.

A good thing about popping into school though, is that the headteacher informed me that I will be getting my own music room, at last! The "library" as it is called (but not used as) will be emptied out, fitted with a projector, smartboard etc, and I can teach there. Hoorah. That is good news.

I need to get changed, have a cup of tea, and zonk in front of the TV. Perhaps I should do some washing up, too. And am I going back to school tomorrow? Not likely.
